After much anticipation, the anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s iconic horror manga Uzumaki has finally arrived. Known for its eerie atmosphere, twisted visuals, and psychological dread, Uzumaki has long been hailed as one of the most haunting works in the horror genre.
Fans have eagerly awaited its transformation from page to screen. And now, with its debut on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, Uzumaki is bringing Ito’s nightmarish vision to life.
The Uzumaki anime will be a mini-series consisting of four episodes, each airing weekly through mid-October. As of now, two episodes have aired. Here’s Uzumaki‘s full release schedule:
- Episode 1 – September 28, 2024
- Episode 2 – October 5, 2024
- Episode 3 – October 12, 2024
- Episode 4 – October 19, 2024
For the uninitiated, Uzumaki centers around the eerie happenings in a small town that becomes obsessed with spirals. It all started with a weird phenomenon, then spiraled into a grotesque horror consuming the entire town.
Studio Drive is in charge of the anime’s production, while Production I.G. USA and Adult Swim co-produce the series. The anime was initially set to debut in 2020, but it faced a series of delays that pushed the release back multiple times.
Production issues postponed the series in 2021, then complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic further delayed the project to October 2022. But in mid-2022, the creators made the difficult decision to delay the project indefinitely, stating their desire to ensure that the adaptation was not just visually stunning but also true to the spirit of Junji Ito’s original work.
