Tina Turner's Remarkable Move From The US To Switzerland: A Journey Of Love And Citizenship

You may not have even realized it, but Tina Turner left the United States for Switzerland decades ago. She hasn't even been a US citizen since 2013. This decision wasn't just about relocation; it was a strategic choice influenced by her love life, tax benefits, and a desire for a peaceful life in a beautiful country.

After meeting German music executive Erwin Bach in 1986, Tina began spending less time in the US. The couple's relationship blossomed as they shared time between his home in Cologne, Germany, and her properties in Los Angeles, London, and the French Riviera. Their love story took a significant turn when they decided to move to Switzerland in 1995, seeking a quieter and more orderly lifestyle.

Tina often spoke fondly of Switzerland, appreciating what she described as "the Swiss zeal for order." The country also offered her a favorable tax rate of just 11.5%, making it an attractive place to settle down. However, moving wasn't without its challenges.

One of the initial hurdles they faced was the restriction on property ownership for non-Swiss citizens. Foreigners were allowed to buy in touristy areas, such as ski resorts, but desirable locations like Zurich were off-limits. Undeterred, Tina and Erwin opted to rent instead, living in a stunning estate called Chateau Algonquin on the shores of Lake Zurich.

In July 2013, Tina and Erwin celebrated their marriage at Chateau Algonquin, surrounded by a star-studded guest list that included Oprah Winfrey and David Bowie. Just months before their wedding, Tina received Swiss citizenship, which marked a significant milestone in her journey.

To obtain citizenship, Tina took a mandatory test that assessed her knowledge of the German language and Swiss history. After nearly twenty years of living in the country, she finally became a citizen. In a move that surprised many, she renounced her American citizenship soon after, a decision likely tied to tax implications.

Fast forward to the end of 2021, and a Swiss news outlet revealed that Tina and Erwin had finally purchased property in Switzerland. They acquired a compound consisting of ten historic buildings in Stäfa, with a total living space of 260,000 square feet, featuring a private pond, stream, boat dock, and swimming pool. The property was reportedly purchased for 70 million Swiss Francs, which is about $76 million USD!

Interestingly, to help finance this significant investment, Tina sold her music rights and her name, image, and likeness rights to a music publishing company for $50 million. This decision came after both she and Erwin received their Swiss citizenship, solidifying their status as proud Swiss property owners.

Tina Turner's journey to Switzerland is a fascinating tale of love, determination, and the pursuit of a new life. Her story inspires many who seek to find their place in the world and embrace new opportunities.
