The highly awaited Minecraft Movie just got its very first trailer, and some of us ended up kind of liking it. However, just when things were going well, it seemed the reviews started getting dislike-bombed. As of writing this, the Minecraft movie trailer has a whopping 1 million dislikes on YouTube! So, let’s go over why the trailer got such crazy backlash and how it can be fixed.
Understanding the Dislike Surge: Why Did the Minecraft Movie Trailer Get 1 Million Dislikes?
If you watched the trailer, then you might already have some thoughts on this issue. It turns out that most people share a similar set of complaints and feedback regarding the movie. While the terrain and blocks have been crafted quite well, this is where the positive feedback ends.
The mobs in this movie world appear over the top for many viewers, including myself. For instance, the sheep character has drawn criticism for being particularly scary. The intention was to make it goofy and derpy, but it ended up being too realistic and terrifying. It’s even been compared to the original Sonic design, and for good reason!
One of the most problematic flaws in the trailer is definitely the human characters. They are very obviously green-screened into the animated surroundings, standing out far too much. It seems like Warner Bros. aimed to feature well-known names in the film; however, they could have just been voice actors, and that wouldn't have drawn any complaints.
Character Design and Realism: What Went Wrong?
A Minecraft Movie should have been entirely animated, in my opinion. The mix of CGI and live-action does not quite work, and the character costumes are simply ridiculous. Moreover, Jack Black seems to be playing himself rather than a unique character, which detracts from the overall experience.
Further criticism has been directed towards the character designs. Fans on social media have voiced their opinions, creating memes and comparisons that highlight the discrepancies in character portrayals. This has raised questions about whether the design choices were indeed suitable for a Minecraft-themed movie.
Proposed Solutions: What Should Mojang and Warner Bros. Do Now?
So, what can Mojang and Warner Bros. do to turn this situation around? Listening to the community and its constructive criticism is crucial. It would be advantageous for them to consider delaying the movie release yet again and instead focus on making it fully animated, eliminating the need for live actors altogether.
Additionally, the Minecraft world should be less realistic. Not just the sheep, but the overall aesthetic should be more cartoonish. The intent to match the world with human actors doesn’t need to go that far. There are several other smaller flaws, from the absence of crafting recipes to items appearing too small, but these adjustments could make a significant difference.
However, on a positive note, there are reports that Technoblade will have a memorial in the film, which is a brilliant touch that many fans appreciate. This kind of gesture can help in healing the wounds caused by the trailer backlash.
That said, are you surprised that the Minecraft Movie trailer has garnered over 1 million dislikes? How would you fix this situation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
