Minecraft has a total of 64 biomes in all three dimensions, from oceans to forests and mountains. However, not every biome was made equal. Some biomes just lack character and features compared to others. Today, I’ll be sharing a list of biomes I’d like to be changed and improved in the upcoming Minecraft 1.22 update. I won’t be including the End biomes, as they all need improvements. So, buckle up, and let’s begin.
Forest Biomes: A Common Yet Bland Experience
The Regular forest biome is the first on my list. It's incredibly common in Minecraft, yet it feels bland and unexciting. You often spawn in or near a forest, which consists mainly of trees, animals, and flowers. While this setup is functional for gameplay, its appearance lacks the charm and uniqueness that other biomes possess.
In the Bedrock Edition, forests feature fallen logs, moss carpets, and mushrooms, which add realism. I propose adding simple stumps and trees with textured holes. Additionally, changing the ground in certain areas to include podzol, moss, or rooted dirt would enhance the visual appeal.
To enrich the ambiance, imagine the sounds of birds chirping and fine details like dew on grass or bugs crawling. While there are plenty of mobs in this biome, I believe these aesthetic changes would elevate the overall experience. Other forest biomes could also benefit from similar enhancements.
Desert Biomes: A Need for Life and Color
The desert biome is intentionally barren and plain, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn't receive exciting new features. Having been a candidate in the 2018 biome vote, Mojang developers have already shared ideas on how to improve this biome. One major suggestion is to introduce palm trees, as there are currently no naturally generating trees.
Adding meerkat mobs could also bring life and movement to the desert landscape. Furthermore, I suggest enhancing cactus plants with new textures featuring flowers and introducing several sand block variants. More dead plants, as well as vibrant ones suited to warm climates, would also add interest.
To convey the heat of the desert, vignetting effects and stronger sound effects would create a more immersive environment. These changes could transform the desert biome from a dull landscape into a vibrant ecosystem.
Oceans: A Call for Diversity and Color
While the warm ocean biome might be lively, the rest feel dull and too similar. A significant enhancement for the ocean biomes would be the introduction of more plant-like blocks that add color and variety. This could include unique fish and mammals, giving players more to explore.
For the deep ocean variants, colder temperatures could be represented with a vignette effect, indicating a chilling environment without causing damage. In contrast, frozen ocean biomes could introduce slow freezing damage over time. This element would create a challenging survival experience for players venturing into these waters.
Mushroom Islands: Enhancing Rarity with New Features
The Mushroom Island, one of the rarest biomes in Minecraft, deserves a closer look for enhancement. Currently, mycelium blocks could benefit from more variants, and we could expand the types of mushrooms that grow, going beyond the traditional red and brown. Introducing new mushroom blocks on the sides of giant mushrooms would also add diversity.
While hostile mobs are scarce in this biome, having some indication of their presence would be helpful. Imagine glowing features, like shroomlights nestled in the giant mushrooms or a new plant light source block. Adding small lakes or pools around these islands could also create a more dynamic environment.
Windswept Hills: Adding Flavor to Unique Terrain
The various windswept biomes, including windswept hills and forests, could use more features to liven them up. Although these biomes have varied terrain, such as cliffs and valleys, they often feel bland. Introducing different floor blocks, like stone, cobblestone, and mossy boulders of various sizes, would bring a refreshing change.
Adding unique plants and introducing new mobs, like a bear, could make these biomes more engaging. With a little creativity, we can transform these windswept areas into lively landscapes full of interesting features.
