Xiaomi announced HyperOS for its devices almost about a year ago, replacing its iconic MIUI. Now that they have begun testing the next version of their Android skin on a limited number of devices, we felt it was the perfect moment to compile a wishlist of features we’d want to see in HyperOS 2.0 and talk about areas where Xiaomi can improve.
Anticipating the Release of HyperOS 2.0
HyperOS 2.0 is currently undergoing early testing in China on devices like the Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro. These trials are crucial as they help identify and iron out any significant issues before the broader public rollout. Given that Xiaomi launched HyperOS in October of the previous year, many analysts predict that the new version will be released around October of this year, alongside the anticipated Xiaomi 15 series. Moreover, there is a possibility for an earlier release, especially since Android 15 is expected to debut in August, coinciding with Google's Pixel 9 series.
In terms of rollout strategy, the update is likely to first reach last year’s flagship phones (the Xiaomi 14 series), followed by other Mi, Redmi, and POCO models. For mid-range and budget devices, the wider rollout of HyperOS 2.0 may not occur until 2025, and there is still no definitive timeline, which means it could be subject to delays.
Confirmed Features of HyperOS 2.0
In addition to our wishlist, there are confirmed features set to be included in HyperOS 2.0. Here’s a quick overview of what users can expect:
- New Super Wallpapers
- Enhanced animation engine for improved animations
- Revamped camera UI for easier mode switching
- HyperMind 2.0 features to optimize balance and battery life
- Grouped notifications from the same source
- Redesigned control center, potentially inspired by iOS
- Personalized messages in Always On Display, similar to iOS
Features We Wish to See in HyperOS 2.0
While some features are already confirmed, there are several enhancements we hope to see in HyperOS 2.0. Notably, we are not including features that are part of Android 15, such as app archives and notification cooldowns, since they are expected to be integrated into HyperOS for various devices. Instead, here’s our wishlist of desired features:
Customizable Icon Themes and Styles
Xiaomi's current OS options limit icon customization to size adjustments and label hiding. Given the trend in iOS 18 toward enhanced icon personalization, including colored theming and dark mode, we believe Xiaomi should follow suit. This step would allow users to enjoy a more personalized interface.
Updated Stock App Icons
Since MIUI 10, the app icons have seen minimal design changes, which can feel outdated. A refresh is necessary for stock apps to enhance their visual appeal and functionality, making them more engaging and modern.
Integration of Material You
Despite the popularity of the Material You theming introduced by Google, Xiaomi has been slow to adopt this feature. Other Android skins like One UI and FuntouchOS have already integrated it. It's high time for HyperOS to embrace this system-wide theming to enhance user experience.
Revamp of Interface and Settings
Even with the transition from MIUI to HyperOS, the fundamental interface remains largely unchanged. Users have noted that the settings menu is cluttered and difficult to navigate. A redesign could significantly improve user-friendliness, making options more accessible.
Restoration of the Old Control Center
HyperOS adopted a new control center style that separates notifications and quick toggles, which has received mixed reviews. Many users preferred the previous merged control center style. Offering an option to revert to this layout could enhance user satisfaction.
Enhanced Battery Stats and Monitoring
HyperOS 2.0 could benefit from a more detailed battery management interface. Currently, users are unable to view essential metrics like screen-on time or last charge percentage. Including these features would help users better understand their usage patterns and battery health.
Status Bar Customization Options
Adding options to customize which status bar icons are displayed can help declutter the interface. This feature would allow users to prioritize what they see and improve overall accessibility of notifications.
Introduction of Lock Screen Widgets
Lock screen widgets have become a hallmark of convenience in modern smartphone interfaces. Adding customizable widgets and quick shortcuts for apps could significantly enhance user experience, allowing for faster access to essential features without unlocking the phone.
Establishing a Unique Identity for HyperOS
In its later iterations, MIUI started to resemble Apple's iOS, losing much of its unique identity. HyperOS was introduced to combat this trend, but it still reflects some of iOS's design choices. Users desire a return to the individuality that once made MIUI appealing. They hope that HyperOS will innovate rather than imitate, exploring new design elements and features that reflect Xiaomi's brand.
As we look forward to HyperOS 2.0, the excitement among users is palpable. What features do you want to see in the upcoming version? Share your thoughts in the comments!
