Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2: Exciting New Features And Security Enhancements

Google has made significant strides with the recent release of Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, introducing various UI enhancements and quality-of-life improvements. This update also lays the groundwork for new features slated for future releases, including a redesigned Quick Settings menu anticipated in Android 16. Notably, the update has improved Factory Reset Protection and is gearing up to integrate a new security feature inspired by iOS.

One of the most notable additions is a feature that mimics Apple’s Stolen Device Protection, which aims to bolster the security of your applications. Presently, the security of your apps primarily relies on your device’s PIN. However, with the upcoming rollout, Android will require your fingerprint before granting access to sensitive information, such as credit card details and passwords.

This enhancement could prove invaluable if your phone is stolen and the thief knows your PIN. The new feature relies on biometric authentication and does not revert to the PIN/password method like the screen lock (except when the device is in a trusted location). This ensures that crucial information remains secure even in the hands of unauthorized users.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman has identified a code string in Android labeled "mandatory_biometrics_prompt_description," indicating that an "Identity check" feature is in the works. Another contributor from Android Authority, AssembleDebug, shared a screenshot of an intriguing feature titled Mandatory biometric.

Mishaal suggests that this might be an upgraded version of the Trusted Places feature, which keeps your device unlocked when you are in a designated “trusted location.” For those unfamiliar, this is where the Extend Unlock feature is located, allowing for a more seamless user experience.

While a specific release date for this feature remains uncertain, Mishaal notes that it will necessitate Android 15 QPR1 or higher. This is due to the modifications made to the app that manages the biometric prompt dialog.
